Jordan.. WiMAX is coming

May 23, 2007

A new wireless broadband technology is supposed to be launched in the near future(maybe few months). WiMAX is a new technology that will allow you to be connected to the Internet with a relatively high speed up to few Mbps for the users. What is exiting about WiMAX that you don’t need a phone line or anything like that to get connected, You only need a customer premise equipment that the company will install it in your house(it will be popular to have a WiMAX card in your laptop soon). The prices of this service is not clear yet. but hopefully it will push the broadband market in Jordan a little bit further. I think people who are interested in getting a high speed data service will like the idea of only paying for the Internet and they don’t have to pay any additional payment for the phone line or the phone company. The technology is new (the initial standard for this technology was approved in 2001) thus there are some problems regarding devices and manufacturers of these devices but every new technology faces such issues. anyway you can read more about the WiMAX technology here or here.

That’s awesome news… although there are couple of kinks to be worked out.
First the standard is not ratified yet, but that shouldn’t stop the adoption and progressing towards the infrastructure (although there’s a big toll to be paid for being early adopters)
Second the wireless modems are still too big and bulky pausing a major mobility issue. I played with them a little bit and wasn’t impressed. They need to be connected to power source because they were designed as a Last-Mile connection NOT as a mobility solution
Third, Fast switching and roaming pause another level hindrance. Since new -everything- is needed for complete coverage.
Fourth, Intermediate solutions can provide a much cheaper alternatives using 3G, 3.5G and 4G
To sum up … It’s very promising, but has a lot of potential competition in the future from faster UMB and other standards.
One thing is certain, in the future is VERY exciting, and everyone and everything is going to be connected wireless and very soon

Rumours says Fastlink gonna release this service by Sep 2007, anyway I’d love to subscribe to naked DSL instead of paying for bloody JTC for terminal and phone.

Qwaider:yeah i think the problem is that the technology is developing too fast compared to the standardization process but eventually it will happen.

Jad: Umniah got the license for the fixed wireless broadband and as far as I know they will be the first one to start up the first WiMAX network in Jordan.

i don’t know about you , but i recently started to use the wimax tech from umniah , and it stinks , it’s really really slow ,it’s supposed to be 1 mb , but it feels like 128kb, and i’ve contacted the company many times about this issue , but they haven’t fixed it yet ,i’ve been using it since 13 dec 2008 , i hope they fix it , but there’re rumors about zain releasing a new high tech!
my rent commitment will end in a few months and i’m not renting the device again .

Sarah, I think you have a coverage problem, you might want to contact Telecommunications Regulatory Commission if the service is that bad. about Zain, well new two companies are supposed to launch their services in the upcoming months, one of them has a relationship with Zain. But there is also another operator which already providing the service and it’s called Wi-Tribe. For me I still have my ADSL and I don’t think am going to replace it this year.
